BAC Local 1 is the oldest and largest association of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers in North America. Founded in 1865, it serves as a lobbying organization for our industry in tradesmanship and it has been at the forefront of education in Alberta for more than 100 years.

Bricklayers

Bricklayers prepare and lay brick and other masonry units to construct and repair structures such as walls, partitions, patios, arches, fireplaces, and chimneys.

They work with materials such as brick, concrete block, stone, structural tile and precast panels, and often interpret drawings, blueprints, and perform job-related calculations.

Tilesetters

Tilesetters cover, repair, and decorate exterior and interior walls, floors, and ceilings in residential or commercial buildings. This in-demand branch of the masonry trade commonly uses materials such as ceramic, glass, metals, marble, quarry tile, slate, terrazzo, or granite to create functional and artistic spaces.

Refractory Bricklayers

Refractory bricklayers line furnaces, kilns, boilers, tanks and other industrial vessels with high heat or corrosion resistant materials. Day to day, they use specialty high-duty or acid-resistant bricks, monolithics such as plastic or castable refractories, and ceramic fiber insulation products to complete their work.

BAC Local 1 Alberta officers and staff are the representatives of the Union who help workers deal with unfair treatment, discrimination and other workplace issues. This helps balance the power that an employer has over individual employees.

Once you have joined a union, your employer must bargain with your union over your wages, benefits, hours and working conditions. Belonging to Local 1 as an apprentice means employers train you how to safely do your job, and as you advance from apprentice to journeyperson your wage will increase according to our contract (60% journeyperson rate at first year 80% at second and 90% at third year).
